TravelWise

WELCOME to our school TravelWise page.

TravelWise is an ongoing project with a set of practical actions that aim to improve road safety and promote sustainable school travel journeys. It is a partnership between Auckland Regional Transport Authority, North Shore City Council, and our school.

The benefits include:
  • Reduced traffic congestion at the school gates, this improves safety for all children
  • Reduction of polluting car emissions in the environment
  • Helping children learn road safety skills and become familiar with their community
  • Improved engineering infrastructure to promote walking/cycling within the school zone
  • Encouraging walking/cycling to improve children’s fitness and health
  • Encouraging walking/cycling to ensure that children arrive alert and ready to learn

    DID YOU KNOW:
Walking is a learned behaviour. If children are driven everywhere they will expect to be driven. The more you walk, the more likely you are to walk – to the shops, to a friend’s house, to the beach. People who get into good exercise habits in childhood are more likely to grow into healthy adults.
Nearly a third of New Zealand children get very little or no exercise every week. Childhood obesity levels are rising, and with them health problems, such as high blood pressure and joint problems.
Benefits of WSBs for children include: better health and fitness, increased independence, a way of learning to interact with the road environment safely, new friends and lots of fun.
Benefits of walking school buses for parents include: less time stuck in traffic getting kids to school, knowing your child is getting to school safely with supervision, more community involvement and extra free time when you don’t have to pick up and drop off children every day at school.

Our 'TravelWise' school travel plan has been developed by a working party following consultation with the students, staff, and parents. It is a detailed approach to reducing the number of cars at our school gate. It is based on the results of the 2010 Travel survey of how our children travel to school.

WALKING SCHOOL BUS:
A walking school bus is a group of children who walk to and from school supervised by adults. Like a real bus, it travels at a set time and children join the bus at special stops situated close to where they live. It is powered by the commitment of adult volunteers who walk as “drivers”.

Our school has two formal routes. One traveling along Coronation Rd down Hillcrest Ave; the other coming from Moore St, along Sylvia Rd to Hillcrest Ave. Check out a map of our WSB routes and call the office to join. Alternatively get together with some neighbours and plan another route.

The following documents will assist in planning your children's trips to and from school:

* TravelWise new student/entrant flyer (ask at the school office)
* Park & walk map
* Cyclist declaration form  (Ror any 10+yr old who would like to cycle to school.)

ROC Day
ROC Day is a day when EVERYONE walks to school. Then we have fun activities all day to promote road safety, become more environmentally friendly and explore the walkways around our school. Parents are always welcome to join us.

One of the fun activities is to make a collage poster out of rubbish (see right).
