3. PTA Find-out-a-thon Fundraiser

We hope your children are continuing to learn their Find-out-a-thon facts. Due to COVID-19 disruptions, all children will now be tested on their facts on Monday 7 September.

Shade Structure for Hall: Thank you to those who have already found sponsors to raise money for a permanent shade structure at the back of our School Hall.

All Forms Due Monday 7 September: Please send your child to school with their sponsorship form on Monday so that we can add their scores to each form after testing. Miss Rodger and the Student Council will also be giving out prizes to those students who have sets of 6 sponsors.

What if I have misplaced my child’s sponsorship form? Payments can be made into our school bank account via online banking – Sunnybrae Normal School, ASB Northcote, 12 3053 0370789 00. Please include your child’s first name, Room Number and ‘athon’ in the reference.

Top Fundraiser Prize: A reminder that there will be a big prize for the student in each syndicate who has been the most successful at raising sponsorship.

10+ Sponsors/$50 Prizes: Everyone who gets over 10 sponsors or raises at least $50.00 and brings in their sponsorship money before the due date will go in a draw for a major prize.

4. Year 4-6 Cross Country

Great news! Our school cross country will be able to go ahead next Thursday, 10th September. This event will begin at 1:30 pm with the Year 5 and 6 Championship races, followed by the Year 4 Race and the Fun Run for all remaining Year 5 and 6 students.

Unfortunately, due to current Level 2.5 restrictions, parents and caregivers will be unable to come onto the school grounds to support their children. Other students and teachers will be cheering them on and your children will be able to share all their news when they arrive home shortly afterwards. A Seesaw notice will be sent out next week reminding the children what they will need to bring on the day.

Please contact Mary Waters mwaters@sunnybrae.school.nz or your child’s teacher if you have any further questions.

Book orders close on Friday 18 September.

This week our focus has been on the state of flow. When we are immersed in an activity and lose track of time, this is called ‘flow’ or being ‘in the zone’. Flow is highly correlated with happiness because it lifts us from our emotions and helps us stay present (be mindful). People who experience this state regularly often develop other positive traits such as increased concentration, self-esteem and performance. In order for a flow state to occur, the activity should be seen as voluntary, enjoyable and absorbing but not too challenging. Children can turn to these activities when big emotions strike.

Ask your child to think about the creative activities they enjoy. Encourage them to think about positive, ‘healthy’ pastimes (i.e. not gaming, eating, shopping etc).

  • What do they like doing in their spare time?
  • What activities do they ‘lose themselves’ in?
  • If they had a day off, what would they do?

Explain to them that when we do our favourite activities and lose track of time, this is called flow and it is really good for us! A brain holiday that helps us relax.

What to do:                                                                                                                    Give your child a range of tactile activities to choose from, based on the resources you have available. For example:

Get your child to choose the activity they would like to start with, explaining that partway through they will get a chance to keep going or change to something else.

Reinforce that the focus of this exercise is to relax and enjoy the activities, rather than feel pressure to complete them. It doesn’t matter if they don’t ‘finish’.

At the end, ask your child how they found it and which activities they felt most absorbed in. Revisit the benefits of flow and doing things that help us feel ‘in the zone.’

This week our PB4L focus has been on showing respect in the cloak bays and toilets.

Our lessons have focussed on:

  • Being hygienic
  • Washing and drying hands properly
  • Using soap, paper and hand sanitizer correctly

Community Notices

To our Auckland whānau

This letter is to inform you about the service delivery for the Children’s Community Dental Service (Auckland Regional Dental Service).

During Level 3, there were national restrictions on the health services able to be offered to minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19. This included restrictions on routine dental treatments and check-ups. Because of this, we have now commenced our COVID-19 Recovery Plan. This means we need to firstly offer appointments to children who have been identified as requiring treatment and those waiting the longest for their routine examination. We also offer an acute service for any child who is experiencing dental pain. In addition, during the transition to Level 2 there may be some restrictions in the range of dental treatments that we are able to provide.

We apologise in advance for the delays this will cause for some children who are due a routine check-up. Please be assured that we will contact you as soon as we are able to offer your child an appointment with our service.

In the meantime, if your child is in pain or you have immediate concerns with their teeth, please phone 0800 TALK TEETH (0800-8255-83384). Our staff will be available to discuss your concerns with you directly, and will offer your child an appointment if required. For more information as well as our top tips for keeping your child’s smile bright, please search ‘ARDS’ on the Waitematā DHB website – www.waitematadhb.govt.nz
