8.  Thank You to our Year 5 Travelwise Team 2020

Thank you to our wonderful Year 5 Travelwise Team who have helped out Mrs Hanson throughout the year at the school crossing. Matt Sweetingham from Auckland Transport has always been so impressed with your enthusiasm and commitment to road safety.

Lewis Snape, Hannah Shin, Dominic Emms, Charlotte Barlow, Sophia Suresh, Mika Delowe, Ryujiro Kudo, Sienna Fitzgerald, Ximon Nang-Is, Anne Nagafuchi and Kate Bloem.

Remember:

– walk, don’t run across the crossing

– if the light is flashing, don’t begin to cross

– push bikes and scooters across the road

– wait behind the yellow line

9.  Safe Walking Discussions

Last week we held  ‘safe walking discussions’ with all our students. These are run each term and all teachers are involved. We group students across the school according to the direction they leave our school gates and how they travel home from school. At these safety discussions we talk about many areas of road safety for pedestrians, including:

  • how to cross the road safely, using the crossing
  • crossing roads safely with an adult when there isn’t a crossing
  • sneaky driveways
  • what to do if your parent isn’t at your meeting place after school
  • carrying balls safely to school in a bag
  • how to move safely through car parks
  • looking at the light indicators on cars, so you know what they might do next
  • getting in and out of cars safely near busy roads. eg. getting out on the footpath side.

10.  PB4L

This week our PB4L focus has been on showing respect, co-operation and excellence during assemblies.

Our lessons have focused on:

  • Respecting the speaker
  • Actively listening and participating
  • Performing with enthusiasm
  • Showing respect when receiving an award

11. Wellbeing

At school this week we continued to focus on emotional literacy (the ability to name and recognise different emotions). Having this ability is critical to thinking about our feelings and managing our reactions. It can also help us to better understand and be there for others. In class, students played the frozen emotions game. The students worked together in groups to represent, share and guess different emotions.

See below some links to stories about feelings that you might like to listen to with your child:

“In My Heart”

“A Little Spot of Feelings”
