Please Drop Off at the Gate between 8:30 and 8:45 am.

Covid-19 Alert Level 1

In Term 3, we ask that parents/caregivers continue to drop their children at the school gates in the morning to help reduce contact tracing and foster independence in our students. Staff and Student Councillors will be present at all gates to assist with drop off.

Parents/caregivers are welcome to come to the classroom to pick up their children at 3:00 pm.

3.  NZ Maths Week 2021: 9th – 13th August

NZ Maths Week is a great time to celebrate all things maths!

On the NZ Maths page there are challenges and games that can be played over the week. Take a look at the family section which includes many different ways you can support your child in maths at home. Or check out  Maths Kete for fun and games.

Remember to get your child to log onto Mathseeds or Mathletics

Here are some more ideas

How will you and your family include some fun maths learning at home?

Send photos of you and your family celebrating Maths Week to mebborn@sunnybrae.school.nz or mwaters@sunnybrae.school.nz

4. Sunnybrae Open Afternoon – Thursday 26 August

We would love our Sunnybrae families to join us for an open afternoon to share and celebrate their child/ren’s learning.

Date: Thursday 26 August 2021

Time: 3:00 – 5:00 pm

Purpose: For students to share their books, samples of work, and displays with their parents/caregivers and extended whanau.

An invitation will be sent to families next week.

5. Year 4/5 Museum Trip

Our Year 4/5 classes recently visited the Auckland Museum as part of their ‘Our World’ Unit of inquiry. Each class spent time in a programme focusing on connecting with their local volcanoes, exploring different types of volcanic eruptions and participating in a rock sorting challenge. Learners were also put to the test to see how they would prepare for a volcanic eruption. A big thank you to all of our parent helpers for their assistance with supervision on the day.

6. Celebrating Success at Sunnybrae

Rosie Beck (R20) recently had one of her stories published in an edition of the Toitoi magazine. Toitoi is a journal for young writers and artists that celebrates the creative spirit of young New Zealanders. The photo below is of Rosie proudly displaying her story titled ‘Professor Ding Dong’. Well done Rosie!

7.  Sunnybrae Cultural Project

Our Sunnybrae Cultural project continues to be a huge success! On Wednesday our Community Engagement team met with our Latin American families. They shared stories, key images and words that represent their culture. Their ideas will be worked on by an artist and will form one of the panels on the fence of the Junior playground on Sunnybrae Road.

On Thursday 12 August we will meet with our Korean families at 2:30 pm.

Special thanks to Yukako Sato, pictured below with her daughter Miu for providing her thoughts about our recent Japanese evening.
“As there are many cultures in one classroom, it benefits all of the children to know each other. I took part in the Japanese Cultural evening. It was fun talking about my culture. I don’t usually talk about Japan much anymore. The children who were present at the Japanese evening listened to many interesting stories. From this experience, our children learned new information about our culture.”

8.  Yummy Sticker Promotion

Our school is participating in the Yummy Sticker promotion and we are asking you to collect the Yummy cut-out labels from bags and the stickers from apples. These are available from New World and PAK’n’SAVE. Please return these sheets to the office as you complete them and pick up a new one. To download and print more sheets go to www.yummyfruit.co.nz and click on School Sticker Promo. Participating schools get a share of $200,000 worth of sports gear, depending on the number of stickers collected. All sheets are due to the school office by Friday 24 September.

9.  Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

This week our PB4L focus has been on using respect and co-operation in the library.

Our lessons have focussed on:

  • Looking after resources
  • Using computers appropriately
  • Sharing books and resources

10.  YMCA After School Care Programme

11. Sunnybrae Bush Weta Houses

Thank you to the Snape Family who have kindly donated two Weta Houses to Sunnybrae. Lewis Snape (Room 19) has installed these on trees in the Sunnybrae Bush.

12. Sunnybrae Garden Group

We would love help from our school community with our Sunnybrae Garden. Our Student Garden Group is held on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:00 pm. Please feel free to join us at the school garden after you have signed in at the office. For more information you can contact Viv Morley, vmorley@sunnybrae.school.nz.

We would also appreciate donations of any spare paper bags from the supermarket. Please ask your child to give your spare paper bags to Mrs Morley in Room 14 or leave them at the office.

13. Intermediate Open Days and Evenings

Our local Intermediate Schools are holding a number of Open Days and Evenings over the next few weeks. For schools, dates, and times, please refer to the Community Notices below.

Kind Regards

Lorene Hurd
