Wednesday 1 September – Remaining at Alert Level 4

1 September 2021

Remaining at Alert Level 4

Dear Parents/Caregivers

I think we had all anticipated a further extension of Alert Level 4, and the Prime Minister has confirmed this. The Alert Level will be reviewed, but for now, Alert Level 4 will remain in place until Monday 13 September. Despite this news, it is really pleasing to see that Alert Level 4 is having its impact on the number of confirmed cases. At Sunnybrae Normal School, our distance learning programme will continue.

We were very sad to see flooding impacting various communities around West Auckland yesterday. Our heart goes out to friends and family in affected areas.

We are looking for parent input on the following Sunnybrae Strategic Goals for 2021. It would be wonderful to hear from you. More information below.

Wellbeing Action Team

2021 Focus = Student Wellbeing

Team Leaders: Mary Waters, Wendy Frazer and Melanie Hanson

Wellbeing Team Recent Initiatives

The Resilience Project

  • Teachers attended professional development sessions on how to deliver ‘The Resilience Project’. The project focuses on teaching lessons each week on the GEM principles of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. Weekly lessons are being taught in all classrooms.
  • Earlier this year, we hosted an evening to introduce ‘The Resilience Project’ to our parent community. Thank you to all who attended.
  • The Wellbeing Team meets regularly with The Resilience Project Facilitator, Georgie. This includes Zoom meetings during our current lockdown.
  • Our Wellbeing Team attended a networking meeting with local schools to share ideas.

Tu Manawa Project

  • We recently started an initiative at school called the Tu Manawa Project to support students to increase their participation in physical activities. This has been very successful and we look forward to continuing this when we return to school.

Student Nutrition

  • The Wellbeing Team meets regularly to discuss our next initiatives. We have continued to do this during the lockdown and are currently planning a nutrition focus for students.

Wellbeing Wednesday

  • Each week during lockdown we celebrate ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ by providing an opportunity for families to take a break and do something for their wellbeing. We send out a link with an activity they could do. These have included a gratitude activity and some activities that can be done outside as a family.
  • We have recently met to discuss ways to support student wellbeing once we are back at school after this current lockdown.

Home Learning

  • We are including some initiatives from The Resilience Project around our GEM (Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness) principles in our home learning.

Staff Wellbeing Workshop

“I just wanted to let you know how useful I found the Wellbeing Workshop that I attended by zoom on Tuesday 31 August.  Please thank Wendy for taking the time to bring myself and other new staff up to speed with the Wellbeing project at SNS.”

Jennifer Wheadon – Office Manager
