Community Notices

Welcome to Sunnybrae
This week we would like to welcome the following new students and their families to our school community: Mikayla to Room 2 and Nicole to Room 15

The PB4L focus for Term 4 Week 1 will be on using excellence everywhere. Our lessons will focus on using kind words.

Transition to School Event
On Thursday 27 October, the Year 1 teachers and Senior Leadership Team joined other Year 1 teachers from the Te Kāhui Ako Pupuke to meet with families of students who are beginning their school journey.
It was an enjoyable evening where the Year 1 team could talk to parents and share their knowledge and insights on ways to ensure the transition to school is as smooth as possible.

This week our wellbeing tip focuses on what you can do when things are feeling a bit stressed.
Here is a scientifically-based and super simple activity that is sure to help with all those tense and intense feelings: Tummy breathing – taking notice of our breathing is one of the best ways we can calm our brains and body down – it is our amygdala that is causing all our worry and stress, and it needs oxygen. Your tamariki know a lot about this – tummy breathing and mindfulness activities are practised as part of their school day. Get them to lead you through what they know such as Tummy Breathing, Body Scan or Hikitia Te Hā

Exeloo Tool Donation
The gift that keeps on giving.
A great big thank you again for Exeloo providing Sunnybrae with even more power tools for the Caretaker’s Shed. Your support means a lot to our school and the community. As a token of appreciation, Piyal baked a beautiful cake for the staff of Exeloo to enjoy.

Covered Turf Area
We are excited to announce, that after alot of fundraising by the PTA and support from the Board of Trustees, the construction of the Covered Turf in front of Rooms 8 – 12 begins soon.
This will be a multi sport area that is covered with a shade roof to allow for all-weather sport training and outdoor activities.
Stage 1 Shade Systems – starting 18 November (weather permitting), finish 2 December.  Stage 2 Tiger Turf – starting 5 December (weather permitting), finish 23 December.

Safety measures are in place as there will be large trucks bringing materials to the backfield via front of Rooms 15 – 20, around the side of Room 20 and then across the field.  Please remind your children to act responsibly when these vehicles are in operation and to stay well clear of the construction site.

Homestay Families Needed for TNIS Students
We have two Korean learners arriving to study at TNIS for Term 1, 2023 on 10 January next year. Homestay compensation is $320/w per student.
Police vetting of anyone over 18 in the home will be required. A homestay learner is a great chance to share different cultures and widen your child’s worldview. Any families interesting in hosting the visitors, please contact Sophia Yang on

Enrolments
Enrolments at Sunnybrae Normal School
If you live ‘in zone’ and have a child turning 5 this year, please make sure you enrol your child/children as soon as possible. Please also encourage any new ‘in zone’ families to enrol their children as this helps us with future planning. Please visit our website www.sunnybrae.school.nz and complete the enrolment form.
If you are moving away from Sunnybrae, please contact the office as soon as possible.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:  Lockdown Drill
As part of the ongoing training and review of our Emergency Procedures, Sunnybrae held a Lockdown Drill on Monday 7 November at 1:10 pm.
Prior to the drill, teachers reviewed with their students what they should do if they hear the ‘lockdown’ announcement. During lunchtime, when students were outside, the lockdown announcement was made and students made their way to the nearest classroom. Staff were impressed with how quickly and sensibly students made their way to the nearest classroom and how the outdoor areas were cleared. Later once the ‘all clear’ announcement was made students promptly made their way to their Emergency Assembly Area to meet up with their teacher and classmates for attendance. It is pleasing to report that students and staff were accounted for by just over 3 minutes; a positive result. Following the lockdown teachers reviewed the drill with their class and noted their feedback.

PTA UPDATE:

Thank you to all our families who supported our recent fundraiser by purchasing your child’s fantastic art.  A lot of time and effort went in to creating and displaying the art for our school community to enjoy. We raised $2595 – an excellent effort with money raised going towards our covered turf area.

SAFETY AROUND SCHOOL:
Parking
We are asking that all parents/caregivers be considerate of our many neighbours by ensuring that you leave their driveways clear when you are dropping off or picking up your child/children. For security, please lock your vehicle at these times.
