Week 7

Return to School

Well done to our Year 1 – 3 students who made a successful transition back to school on Monday and Tuesday this week. It was also pleasing to welcome back more of our

Year 4 – 6 students on Wednesday and Thursday. Great to see your smiling faces!

Zoom Reminders

A reminder that class Zoom lessons continue to be held on the 3 days children are not at school with their teachers. For Year 1, Year 2/3 and Year 6 students Zoom sessions are now also held on a Wednesday. Zoom classes are an important time for students to continue to connect with their classmates and teacher.

  • Parents and caregivers should maintain a two-metre physical distance from those not in their household group.
  • Parent/caregivers wear a mask and model correct social distancing during Drop Off/Pick Up.
  • Staff will be greeting students at the school gate between 8:30 – 8:45 am.

Pick Up (3:00 pm)

  • Students will need to leave the school grounds promptly at 3:00 pm.

Preparing for the End of Year

On Thursday 9 December and Friday 10 December, we will be collecting all school devices and resources from students who have not returned to school this term. Children’s school work and belongings will be able to be collected at this time. A schedule with times and organisation will be sent out next week.

Resources

We still have a number of reading books, library books and sports uniforms outstanding. We would appreciate you sending them to school with your child on the next day they are onsite.

Used Uniforms Donations Welcome

Please call the office to arrange drop off of any good second hand uniform that you would like to donate. You could also send it in with your child during their onsite school days if you wish.

We would like to thank those families who have already donated uniforms throughout the year. Please know this has been thoroughly appreciated.

Lost and Found

We have a new dedicated area for Lost and Found. The same area will include a display of used uniforms that are available to our families. We encourage our families to reuse and recycle. The new location is in the building alongside the driveway. Contact the office on (09) 443 5058 if you have any questions or require assistance.

Prospective Parents Meeting

This year, we are holding remote visits for Prospective Parents.  We would love to be able to show you round in person, but unfortunately this year due to Covid restrictions and the layout of our building, it is just not possible.  We appreciate that choosing your child’s Primary school is a hugely important decision and you should have the opportunity to find out as much as possible about all of your options.

To give you the opportunity to find out more and to ask questions we will be holding a zoom meeting at 9:30 am on Wednesday 1 December 2021

Please email officemanager@sunnybrae.school.nz for the link to join this meeting

Celebrating Our School Work

This week the Year 4/5 Team have been writing Poetry as part of their literacy programme.

Haiku

The haiku is a Japanese poetic form that consists of three lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third.

Sandy beaches here

Lapping waves wash up driftwood

Swimming in the sea

by Sam Room 15

Alliteration

Alliteration poems repeat the consonant sounds at the beginning of each, or many of the words in the poem. Consonants are non-vowel letters. An example of alliteration would be, “Mighty Mac moved many mountains.”

Caterpillars

Crawling, crunching and chewing leaves

Smooth, silky skin, slipping silently

Chomping and churning

Lots of little legs, lumbering along luscious leaves

Feasting on flourishing foliage that hasn’t fallen to the floor

Beautiful, bursting bright butterflies

By Finn Room 17

Monkeys

Small, silly, stealthy, swinging and social

Extreme, exotic and extraordinary

Cute, cuddly, crazy creatures

Bland batch of Bonita bananas for bouncing babies

Poachers preparing to pounce on precarious primates

Manic monkeys move mischievously; majestic!

Pupuke Mural

E hara taku toa I te takitahi, He toa taki tini

“My strength is not as an individual, but as a collective”

Over the past few months, Hannah Shin, Ivan Chashchegorov, Issac Vine, Madison Schroder, Ximon Nang-Is and Mika Delowe contributed to the creation of a mural that will be installed in Takapuna. This community art project was a collaboration between students across the Pupuke Kāhui Ako and the Auckland Council Regeneration Agency, Eke Panuku. Thank you to Viv Morley and Anita Knight for supporting the artists.

The Pupuke mural focuses on the natural beauty of Takapuna, incorporating kowhaiwhai (traditional Māori patterns) and Māori designs of the natural world in which they are based. It not only stands as a beautiful symbol of collaboration and ecology, but also celebrates the identity of Takapuna by showcasing Māori motifs, providing a platform for learning and understanding to take place between people.

The project was led by local artist Emma Jane Ormsby of Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Porou descent, with support from mana whenua. Emma is a student at Elam School of Fine Arts and Te Wananga ō Aotearoa, and is undertaking a major in Whakairo (Māori wood-carving).

The mural will be installed in early December on the Auburn Street development location known as the Gasometer site. Part of the site has already become home to the Toka Puia car park, with the rest soon to become home to a high-quality mix of homes, shops and businesses that will make Takapuna an even better place to live, visit and work in. At Eke Panuku Development Auckland, the work being done in Takapuna is all about making the most of the neighbourhood’s striking sea-and-lake location.

If you are in the area, please enjoy viewing the artwork. Here you can see a sample of one section of the 50 metre masterpiece!
