Welcome to Sunnybrae
This week we would like to welcome the following new students and their families to our school community: Kipp and Joshua in Room 2

The PB4L focus for Term 4 Week 1 will be on using excellence everywhere. Our lessons will focus on Looking after belongings & using equipment correctly.

Market Day
As a conclusion to our inquiry study on Locations and Economic Trade,
the Year 4/5 team held a ‘Market Day’ on Friday. Students made items to sell that related to the area of inquiry for their class. Room 13 studied orchards and made apple roses. Room students 15 inquired into the forestry industry and made wooden bag tags. Room 16 students learned about market gardens and grew bean plants to sell. Room 17 students were able to sell ice cream as they had been studying the dairy industry. Students from each class shared what they had learned at the start of the Market Day. Each child made one item for sale and was given a token to ‘buy’ one item. The market was a great success and was enjoyed by all.

Developing Reading Vocabulary
Reading Vocabulary refers to words you can both read and understand. Developing and building a strong vocabulary helps us to comprehend and understand what we have read. It is an important skill to not only read a word correctly, but to question what a word means if unsure. Growing your child’s vocabulary helps develop their communication skills, both in oral language (talking) and writing.

Some ideas to help develop reading vocabulary at home:

  • Read to your child everyday. Discuss new or interesting words and what they mean.
  • Reading picture books at any age is very engaging, but also try reading to them without showing the pictures or read a chapter book where your child is required to really focus on their listening and imagining a ‘picture in their head’. This not only develops listening skills, but encourages your child to ask more questions.
  • Listen to audiobooks at home or in the car.
  • Encourage your child to question words they don’t understand.
  • Talk to your child and use new and interesting words.
  • Play word guessing games (These are great for car trips).

–  “I’m thinking of a word that starts with ‘br’ and means a person is not afraid.” (brave).

–  “What is the opposite of floating?” (sinking)

–  “What are some words that have a similar meaning to ‘happy’?” (glad, joyful, content)

  • Play word games like Scrabble, Boggle and Upwords.
  • Complete simple word finds or crosswords together.
  • Learning common prefixes can help your child learn many new words. Work together to think of as many new words as they can using a common prefix ( ‘dis’, ‘un’, ‘re’). Write these on a piece of paper and add to the list as you think of new words.
