Community Notices

Teacher / Principal Strike
The teachers’ union known as the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) has notified all schools in New Zealand that their members will be taking strike action on Thursday, 16 March.
Due to a reduced number of teachers, Sunnybrae Normal School will be unable to open for a normal school day of instruction on the day of the strike. Although we won’t have enough teachers to open all classrooms, we can open for ‘supervision
only’ on March 16. This would be available for families who cannot make alternative arrangements for childcare.
Please let us know if your child requires to attend school on Thursday March 16 for supervision by replying to the Seesaw message that will be sent to you by your child’s teacher later today.

The PB4L focus for Term 1 Week 7 will be on:
Cooperation: Everywhere
Our lessons will focus on: Playing safe, and keeping our hands and feet to ourselves.

Health & Wellbeing
We acknowledge that many whanau will have been impacted by the recent weather events. Some useful resources on coping with a natural disaster and flooding are available through kids health https://www.kidshealth.org.nz/coping-natural-disaster also Helping Your Child Cope After a Natural Disaster — Publications (ndsu.edu)

PTA UPDATE:
Tonight’s the night…

Family Fun Festival. There is an entertaining evening planned with Food Trucks, Cake & Dessert stalls, Sausage Sizzle, Inflatables, Carnival Side-Show games, raffles and much more.
Bring the whole family, a picnic blanket and your generosity for a fun filled event from 4.30 to 7.30pm.
Tickets
We will be running a cashless system for all Sunnybrae-run games and food stalls. One dollar buys one ticket and these tickets can be used to buy food, drinks, raffles and entry to activities on the night. There will be a ticket booth operating with Eftpos and cash so you don’t have to worry about running out of tickets. Please note that the contracted food trucks will be operating their own cash or electronic payment systems. Unused tickets will not be refunded.

Come along and buy a raffle ticket or two to go in the draw to win this amazing giant Sunnybee plushie.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Junior Swimming Carnival

Last Thursday at 1.30pm the Year 1’s and 2’s had their swimming carnival. It was such a beautiful day and we were all so excited to have the chance to share the skills we had learnt from the 8 lessons that we had from the Skillz4Life swimming instructors. It was wonderful to have our families watching us and cheering us on.
All children were entered into 4 races. They were…
Bulldozer blowing balls
Noodle races
Flutterboard races
Sky Tower races
A few students swam in a fifth race where they demonstrated freestyle using arm circles and breathing. We returned to class waterlogged, exhausted and so proud!

Student Swimming Recounts

The Swimming Carnival looks like Mum and Dad cheering me on and I am happy.
I can smell the chemicals.
Jayden R11

The Swimming Carnival looks like flags on top of the wall.
It smells like chlorine and sunblock.
Kate R11

The Swimming Carnival looks like yellow flags and shiny water.
It smells like drink bottles sitting in the sun.
It’s cold when I hop in the pool.
It’s warm when I am out of the pool.

Thursday 2nd March
Dear diary,
Oh no!  The swimming carnival is tomorrow. I really hope it rains so it gets  cancelled. Even if it doesn’t get cancelled I will still want to get out of the swimming carnival. I hope the pool is really cold and it’s not hot. I hope tomorrow I get sick so I don’t have to go. I will get changed really slowly so I will be late. If i’m not sick, and if my mum still takes me to school i will not get out of the car.
Friday 3rd  March
Dear diary,
Oh no! The swimming carnival is still on. I hope it rains when we are just about to start. I hope that the sun will go so we don’t have to go swimming. I pretended I was sick so I didn’t  have to go to school, but my mum still made me.
The swimming carnival is finished and I came first in freestyle and came second in backstroke. It was fun and I was a bit nervous but then I got excited. The pool was nice and warm even though Mr Gordon said there were ice cubes. I wish we did the swimming carnival every day. Mr Gordon had to stop a race to check if there was poop in the pool and found it was a brown floating hair tie.

Sport trainings and after school sports
As after school sports trainings are getting underway, please remember to be at school to meet your child when their training is finished at a pre-arranged location.
If your child attends YMCA After School Care, please ensure the Y Staff members know when your child has an after school sports session or training.

UP COMING SPORTS:
Year 3-6 Tryathlon
Thursday 23 March 2023 – 1.15 – 3.00pm
We are pleased to be able to hold our annual Tryathlon on Thursday 23 March.
This is a fun activity where everyone is encouraged to participate, either as an individual in the championship race or in a team of 2 or 3 friends where one person swims, one person cycles and the other person runs.
Students are to bring swimming togs, a named bike and helmet and running shoes. All parents, caregivers and extended family members are welcome to come and watch. Hope to see you there.
Hockey
We are looking for Year 3-6 students who are keen to play hockey for Sunnybrae during terms 2 & 3. Games are played at the amazing National Hockey Centre in Albany on Monday after school from 4pm-7pm. Please email Rachel Olliver at rolliver@sunnybrae.school.nz if your child is interested in playing.

REMINDER:
School Arrival Time is 8.30am

At Sunnybrae we ask for children not to arrive at school before 8.30am as teachers are often in meetings and preparing for the day in the classroom, and children are, therefore, unsupervised if they are here early.
We have a number of children arriving early each day. Please can you help us by either booking your child into before school care or not arriving before the 8.30am bell. Thank you for your support.

Enrolments
Enrolments at Sunnybrae Normal School
If you live ‘in zone’ and have a child turning 5 this year, please make sure you enrol your child/children as soon as possible. Please also encourage any new ‘in zone’ families to enrol their children as this helps us with future planning. Please visit our website www.sunnybrae.school.nz and complete the enrolment form.
If you are moving away from Sunnybrae, please contact the office as soon as possible.

SAFETY AROUND SCHOOL:
Parking
We are asking that all parents/caregivers be considerate of our many neighbours by ensuring that you leave their driveways clear when you are dropping off or picking up your child/children. For security, please lock your vehicle at these times.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
SUNNYBRAE NORMAL SCHOOL

REMINDER:
Please note that all children are to be collected from school by 3.15pm. If you are unable to collect before this time, you my be interested in booking your child into the YMCA after school club held in the hall.
