Sunnybee has enjoyed being with the Year 2’s

Describing Our Amazing Sunnybee
Sunnybee has yellow and black stripes. He is special because he is helpful and cleans Mrs Rennie-Younger’s Office. Sunnybee was at the disco on Friday. Lots of children were at the disco with him. Sunnybee is lucky because he gets to stay in Sunnybrae. Christie (Room 12)

Sunnybee has yellow and black stripes. He has the same colours as Sunnybrae. On Friday at the disco Sunnybee had a cuddle with me and Mrs Sharpe took a photo of me and him. Georgia (Room 12)

Sunnybee is a cute bee because he watches Room 11 at the assembly. Sunnybee looks like a stripy bee and he wears a red vest. He has two yellow shoes and two black bumpy legs. Sunnybee feels squishy and warm. He likes to go to the DP’s office. Vega (Room 11)

Sunnybee has two grey wings. He has a red vest. He has two arms and legs. Sunnybee is very excited when the big jar is full of flower gems. It is fun seeing the children playing in their classes. Stanislaw (Room 8)

Earthquake Drill
On Wednesday 2 August Sunnybrae Normal School ran an Earthquake Drill at our school.
All students were prepared for the drill by their classroom teacher. An announcement was made indicating an earthquake. Once the announcement was made, staff and students dropped to the ground to Drop, Cover and Hold. This required people to stay in the building and get under the nearest table or strong structure and get into the turtle position (on knees, rolled into a ball, hands over head). The drill lasted for 6 minutes. Following the drill and the ‘all clear’ announcement was made, teachers completed a debrief document with their class.

Throughout the year, the Year 3/4 students have engaged in learning experiences provided by Mitey. Mitey is an evidence-based, school-wide approach to teaching Mental Health Education which is built around the NZ Curriculum and aligned to the Mental Health Education Guidelines.
Some of the learning experiences are taken from a unit of work that is based around the stunning book, Aroha’s Way. Lessons have focused on understanding emotions, recognising positive and negative thoughts, and developing strategies to build resilience and self-pride. Drama, oral language and writing are key components of the learning.
The Year 3/4 teachers also utilise the Mitey resources to promote kindness, friendship and confidence.

Year 3 & 4 Dance Performance
Every day from Monday 7th – Friday 11th August, the Year 3/4 students will participate in Dance Workshops provided by an instructor from
‘Dance Curriculum’. These workshops will occur during school time and are part of our unit of inquiry around dance and drama.

On Friday 11th August, the Year 3/4 students need to stay at school from 3- 4pm for a final performance, specially for parents and whanau, beginning in the hall at 3:10 pm. The students will stay with their classroom teacher after school and be brought to the hall for the performance. Parents are welcome to go to the hall and take a seat after 3:00 pm.

Students need to leave school by 4:00 pm with an adult or stay on for the YMCA After-School Programme if this has been organised. Any other arrangement must be communicated with the classroom teacher. If you have any questions, please email your child’s teacher. The cost of the workshops is covered by the school, and we encourage all children to participate in all workshops as well as the final performance. This is going to be amazing!

Supporting Daffodil Day
Next Friday, 11 August, we will supporting Daffodil Day by requesting a Gold Coin donation as a fundraiser for the New Zealand Cancer Society.
This will be a non-uniform day. Students are encouraged to come dressed in yellow or their favourite outfit. Please hand coins to the classroom teacher on Friday.

Toy Cars Needed
Thank you to the families who sent in some toy vehicles for the Year 1 Team.
If you have toy cars that you are happy to donate to us, please drop these off at the Deputy Principal’s office. Thank you for your support.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Basketball Rep Players

Congratulations to Elliot (Room 17), Zoe (Room 18) and Deacon (Room 20), all in Year 5, who successfully trialled and were selected for the North Harbour Basketball Under 12 Representative Teams. Well done!

International Scout Scarf Day
On Tuesday August 1st, Scouts all over the country participated in Scout Scarf Day.
Scarf Day is an annual event where Scouts get to show their Scout pride and increase the public’s awareness of Scouting.  We were thrilled to have Timothy (Room 7), Kent (Room 18), Sophie (Room 15) and Bronwyn (Room 17) all wear their scarves to school and tell us about their groups.

PTA UPDATE:
Farewell Justine

We would like to express a huge thanks to Justine Mackenzie.
Justine has been a valued member of our PTA for 9 years and worked tirelessly on school fundraising events. She was a key organiser of many of our Food Festivals/Family Fun Days, designer of the Year 6 Leavers t-shirts and was, most recently, our Chairperson. Justine is an amazing asset to Sunnybrae, and we will miss her on our PTA team.

Back Row: Dora, Mon, Justine, Claire. Front row: Kat, Jane, Mei Ling, Sabina.
