Read-a-thon
A Read-a-thon is a fundraising event whereby students will read over and above what they usually do in exchange for sponsorship by family & family friends.
Our students are seeking online sponsorship for their efforts during our Read-a-thon. Students have Bingo sheets that include fun reading challenges, appropriate to their age and reading level, to complete between now and Friday 27 October.

Reading is a lifelong skill and is an important way for our students to communicate, create and make connections with whānau. Whether you are reading for knowledge, interest, fun or cuddling up with whānau, it is a wonderful experience, whether shared or independent. The funds raised will help us with our future reading and literacy projects at our school including the purchase of decodable reading books.

Thank you for supporting Sunnybrae Normal School and our students.

BOOK WEEK: 24 – 27 OCTOBER
Book Swap

On Tuesday, 24 October, there will be a Book Swap in the School Hall.
From next week, children can bring a book from home and hand to the classroom teacher. Books must be suitable for ages 5-10 and be in good condition. Please just bring one book. On Tuesday 24 October, classrooms will visit the hall and students can choose a book to take home.

Book Character Parade
On Thursday, 26 October, students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character.
At 9:10 am there will be a formal parade on the covered turf for those who are dressed up. This will be a great deal of fun. Parents are welcome to come and watch the parade.

Special Visitors Day
In conjunction with Book Week, Sunnybrae students would like to invite all their Special Grandparents, Best Aunties, Favourite Uncles, or Family Friends to visit our school on Friday 27th October.
Events will include:
8:30 am – The Book Fair Fundraiser opens. Visitors are welcome to visit the library with the children to view the book selection. Books will be available for families to purchase for home or to donate to the Sunnybrae Normal School Library. Eftpos and cash options will be available to purchase the books.
9:00 – 10:10 am – Our Special Visitors Assembly in the Hall.

10:10 – 11:00 am – Our Special Visitors are invited to visit classrooms to read stories with the children and participate in classroom activities. During this time, they are also
welcome to visit the library with the children to choose a book to take home or donate to the school (the library will remain open until 11:00 am).

SAFETY AROUND SCHOOL:

STOP, DROP and GO Zone on Sunnybrae Road
From Week 4 until the end of the year, we would like to trial a STOP, DROP and GO ZONE in our Sunnybrae Road bus bay.
This is a Student Council initiative that aims to support smooth and safe drop-offs for our families. The plan is for a quick stop and quick drop and then go. This will prevent some from parking in the bus bay for long periods.
So what is it? Cars will be able to drive into the bus bay and children will exit the vehicle while parents remain in the car. Children must exit the car on the left-hand side of your vehicle. This allows our children to step onto the sidewalk safely.
Sunnybrae Student Council members will be onsite at drop off to help you out. Please support our student leaders with this new initiative. Thank you for your cooperation.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme
During Term 4 all classes will be taking part in the personal safety programme called Keeping Ourselves Safe.
This programme has been developed by the New Zealand Police and the Ministry of Education and is a comprehensive personal safety programme. It will be taught by your child’s classroom teacher. Our School Community Officer, Senior Constable Steve Harwood, will also take a lesson with each class. Steve has been involved in the
Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme at Sunnybrae Normal School for many years and has recently run a professional development session with our teachers. We thank Constable Harwood for his ongoing support.

Further details can be found in the Seesaw message sent out this week.
If you have any questions about the programme, please contact Anita Knight: aknight@sunnybrae.school.nz.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Table Tennis Success
Congratulations to the Sunnybrae Bees (Maxim, Matilda, Yun Yi and Hing Yi) who competed in the North Harbour Table Tennis competition at the Table Tennis Centre in Akoranga Drive during Term 3. The team won their grade, competing against mostly Intermediate School teams. Well done team.

Book Club has Arrived
Look out for your copy of Issue 7 of the Book Club catalogue that came home in school bags this week.
It’s packed with hundreds of books for just $3.50 to help you on your child’s reading journey. Order online before Wednesday 25 October, for free delivery to school.  CLICK HERE TO ORDER ONLINE

Uniform for Term 4
With the sunnier weather coming our way, this is a reminder that in Term 4, all students must wear a Sunnybrae hat when playing outside.
Wearing fewer layers in the classroom is also recommended so that everyone is at a comfortable temperature. Yellow polo shirts with a sweatshirt that can be taken off and shorts or skorts are ideal. Please ensure your child’s hat is clearly named.
