The PB4L focus for Term 4 Week 4 will be on:
Independence: Playgrounds and Fields – Choose safe and sensible places to play.

We have been working very hard in Year 2

Room 8
Did you know that most fish use air to inflate and deflate their bladder? This helps keep them afloat!
Experiential learning involves hands-on activities and reflection, helping students apply classroom knowledge to real-life scenarios. In this week’s Better Start Literacy lesson, Room 8 delved into the topic of prefixes. The first step was understanding their meanings, followed by practising the identification of prefixes and their meanings in sentences.
To further enhance our understanding, we conducted a hands-on experiment using a balloon to simulate how fish utilise air to inflate and deflate their bladder. We had a blast engaging in this science-integrated literacy activity, and the photos captured the joy and excitement of our learning experience.
Now, our Room 8 students can confidently grasp the concept of prefixes, as our learning was reinforced through the experiment.

Room 11
At the end of last term we made Rēwena bread.
We left our bread in a very warm office to rise (heat pump assisted) and went back to collect our loaves of bread just before lunchtime. We cooked them in a hot oven and then after lunch we were able to taste our loaves of bread. They looked like bread and smelled delicious. We felt how heavy they were (very!) Then we got to try the bread with strawberry jam while we sat outside in the sun. The starter for Rēwena bread is made from potatoes and took 24 hours to make at home. We added this to white and wholemeal flour and some salt and water.
Our unit of inquiry in Term 3 had a big idea that many products go through a process of change before they are consumed or used.
We had a wonderful day in and out of the kitchen. Some of us went back for seconds!

Room 12
Creativity took flight with our paper planes!
Games and toys are so beneficial when learning to be creative and express ourselves, whilst having fun at the same time. As part of our unit of inquiry for this term we designed and assembled our very own paper planes. Each one was unique and well thought out, using different types of medium to draw and colour in. We also had a discussion on different ways we could use our paper planes, the best ways and conditions to fly them in, where paper comes from and best of all we got to take them outside for a test run. We cannot wait to see what other fun toys and games we can create.

NIUE LANGUAGE WEEK:

Sunday 15th to Saturday 21st of October was Niue Language Week.
The theme for the week was:
Fakatūleva e Vagahau Niue mo e Tau Aga Fakamotu ma e Tau Atuhau
Sustain Niue Language and Culture for Future Generations.

Thank you to Phoenix, Room 12, and his whānau who provided resources for the display in the library to celebrate their culture.

Lockdown Drill
On Tuesday 31 October, we will have a planned lockdown drill. The purpose of this drill is to ensure students know the emergency procedures if a lockdown announcement is made when they are outside during lunchtime. Teachers will share a presentation outlining procedures for an emergency lockdown with students prior to the drill. Following the lockdown drill, the classroom will discuss the event and provide feedback.

SAFETY AROUND SCHOOL:

STOP, DROP and GO Zone on Sunnybrae Road
From Week 4 until the end of the school year, we would like to trial a STOP, DROP and GO ZONE in our Sunnybrae Road bus bay.
This is a Student Council initiative that aims to support smooth and safe drop-offs for our families. The plan is for a quick stop and quick drop and then go. This will prevent some from parking in the bus bay for long periods.
So what is it? Cars will be able to drive into the bus bay and children will exit the vehicle while parents remain in the car. Children must exit the car on the left-hand side of your vehicle. This allows our children to step onto the sidewalk safely.
Sunnybrae Student Council members will be onsite at drop off to help you out. Please support our student leaders with this new initiative. Thank you for your cooperation.
